Essay Structure Boot Camp

What do think of when you hear the phrase “boot camp?” When the 4th graders were asked this question they responded, “A really tough training, more than normal camp.” “A place where you’re trying to get to a goal really fast.” and “Hard-core training where there is no break.”

In order to get ready to write an opinion essay, students attended writing boot camp. In their “essay structure boot camp," they learned that writers use an essay frame to help structure their writing. The “essay structure boot camp” helped the students get a vision of the structure they are working to create, and be familiar with, by the end of the opinion essay unit.

The 4th graders were correct in their assessment of what boot camp is, and they applied what they knew about boot camp to their writing session. Since they are used to going through the writing process, it is unusual for them to work on a product from start to finish in one writing session. So, this was definitely more than a normal session. They worked in pairs to get to the goal of writing an essay really fast, following the essay structure. It was definitely hard-core training, and there was no break. They wrote fast and furious!

Just like any other boot camp, it was hard and grueling work, but it made them more prepared for the unit and the writing that lies ahead. Way to go 4th graders!
