Sixth Grade Ancient Rome and Greece Feast
Sixth graders celebrated the end of the year with a final feast, featuring Ancient Greece and Rome. Parents brought in delicious food from the region and all enjoyed a unique lunch together at the Junior High Terrace. Afterward, the sixth graders shared their Greek Mythology Puppet Shows and Roman Videos.
For the past month, the sixth graders have been working on these two projects in the core and specialist classes. After learning about the Greek gods, they created their own original script using the gods and goddesses as their characters. During this time, they also created their very own puppets in Art class, with some groups making more than a dozen puppets! Finally, they practiced these puppet shows in their Core classes and in Drama so that they would be ready to present to their parents.
For their Roman project, each group chose a topic and researched it. They then came up with a proposal for what their final project would be. Their only requirement was that they create a 4-6 minute video presentation on their topic. Once their proposal was approved, they created an organized task list of what needed to be done and whom would be completing each task. Some groups decided to create skits featuring the mythological creation of Rome, others recreated battle scenes from the Colosseum, and others wrote their own original lyrics on their topic to modern songs. Upon walking into the classroom (or just outside the door), one could see the organized chaos. No one was working on the same thing; some were sanding down sticks to create a makeshift boat, others were writing lyrics or editing footage on iMovie or researching a particular topic more in depth or creating masks and costumes. Not only did they learn more about their Roman topic, but they also learned how to work well in groups over an extended period of time. Many were faced with a number of challenging situations, but all survived much stronger in the end!
