7th Graders Put Math in Action!

    Kelly Neale
7th graders raced around the classroom to see who could reach the finish line first with the correct amount of money. All this was part of their problem-solving workshop in math to test their mastery of percent operations. Students were required to spend some money, earn some money, and come home with the correct amount, right down to the penny. They teamed up to "order food" at Tony's Mexican Grill, "buy holiday gifts" from LL Bean, "withdraw savings" from the bank, and "sell" video games, all involving calculating percentages of taxes, tips, discounts, interest rates, and commissions along the way. A competitive spirit filled the room in the race to the finish, and it was fun to hear the ensuing math debates as one student corrected his teammate saying, "You just tipped $19 on a $23 meal!" or "You can't take the discount on the tax." Math really is all around us in everyday life, as 7th grade mathematicians discovered!

  • Financial Aid at Berkeley Hall

Berkeley Hall is deeply committed to promoting socioeconomic diversity in our school community. To that end, the school offers need-based grants to qualified students from kindergarten to 8th grade. Our financial aid application process is thorough and allows our Financial Aid Committee to get a clear picture of a family's circumstances. First, a family should look at all personal avenues for meeting costs. If all available resources including both parents' full-time employment are still not enough to meet tuition and fees, then the family may qualify for aid. We encourage returning families who feel they are in this situation to apply for financial aid for the 2017-18 school year. To find out how, click here. Deadlines are fast approaching.

  • Amazing Colors - Students Test Acids & Bases

    Ms. Stodden
Students boiled red cabbage to extract the purple juice and used the juice as a pH indicator. They tested  a number of solutions with the juice, as well as with pH paper, to determine the acidity and basicity of each solution. The juice turned different colors according their pH. It almost looked like they were dyeing

Easter Eggs, with so many different color solutions. Colors spanned from red through every color of the rainbow including shades of blue, green, yellow and purple. Although many acids are edible, students learn they should never taste chemicals in the lab to determine the identity of a substance.

  • Inquisitive Minds in Nursery

Inquisitive nursery students have their critical thinking in gear. The students were left to discover how to light a Christmas bulb with a battery. It didn’t take long before their natural curiosity and need to explore the world around them gave them a delightful surprise and the beginning knowledge of electricity. Unprompted, the students wanted to have a closer look at the bulb when it burned out and turned black. They took a magnifying glass and looked into the tiny bulb to discover more.

  • Sixth Grade Publishing Party

Sixth graders held their first “Publishing Party” of the year, focusing on personal narratives. Parents were a great audience as they visited small groups of student writers, where each student read aloud two of their best stories.

During the writing process, students learned many strategies to make their true stories meaningful and engaging to their audience. The goal was to powerfully present the narrator’s point of view by using exact words in dialogue, including precise details to describe the action.

One technique used, to bring out the heart of the story, was to constantly ask, “What is my story really about?” Students kept revising their stories to make them more engaging and meaningful.

Another technique used helped students track both external and internal events. They created story arcs of the main events of their story to show during any given event what the main character was thinking and how he/she was feeling.

Students elaborated on important scenes by zooming in and zooming out of the main story through the use of flashbacks and flashforwards. Flashbacks look back on earlier events to bring out their importance to what is happening currently. And flash-forwards look to the future when meaningful lessons are realized.

Another tool used, which helps build tension, was slowing down a scene, telling the story bit by bit. By building tension, writers were able to reveal their deeper meaning, and this strategy made their piece much stronger.

  • 5th Grade Native American Project Presentation

Over the course of the first trimester fifth grade students studied four major Native American tribes (Navajo, Makah, Cheyenne, and Iroquois). They worked in groups to conduct research both using technology and informational text to discover how a certain tribe organized themselves and adapted to their environment. After students researched their tribe, they worked in groups to make a presentation either in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, poster, or picture book. Students then presented their findings to the class and discussed the similarities or differences between tribes.

  • 7th Graders Have Fun Creating "The Empire Game"

    Mrs. Tartaglia
The 7th graders enjoyed working in groups to create board games about the Roman and Byzantine empires called "The Empire Game." Students decided on a focus, discussed the design of the game board, brainstormed ideas, identified events, places, and people to include on the game board, divided game-making tasks, and shared the game with the rest of the class.

Here are some students' responses to the question, "How did making a board game deepen your understanding of the Roman and Byzantine empires?"

"We learned some subjects, the Roman and Byzantine Empires, while having fun."
"We had to write questions and answers based on our knowledge of the Roman and Byzantine Empires."
"While we were researching answers to questions, we found out more without even realizing it."
"If you didn't know the facts, you wouldn't be able to create the game."
"It helped deepen my understanding of which empire owned what."
"It made the facts sink into my head."
"It made learning fun, and by making it fun I enjoyed learning about it."
"I understand more what their day to day lives were like."
"It shows and lets me know how different and alike the two empires were."
    "It shows how they progressed."
"It helped me understanding by teaching me the many different things that they have built, and what their lives were like all those years ago."
"Creating a board game about the Roman and Byzantine Empires deepened our understanding of the history of these empires because we learned and had fun at the same time. We also played the game many times which helped to get the information into our heads."

  • Bobcat Band Begins

The Bobcat Band is in full swing as the students start to learn the basics of putting together instruments, making sound and playing together in unison. Most of the 7th and 8th graders in the class are first time players and have already taken a liking to playing an instrument. Students have a choice of playing the flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, or percussion. One student has been seen dancing around with his trumpet as he learns to play new tunes.

    BHS Diwali Festival

Come to the BHS Diwali Festival on Friday, November 4 at 3:15pm in Hodges.

This Festival of Lights will include: Bollywood dancing and dance demonstrations, henna tatoos, Indian food, Diwali arts and crafts, and the sound and energy of Diwali. All are welcome! Come right after school at 3:15pm for a special 5-minute presentation: "What is Diwali?"

Come and enjoy fabulous Indian food, learn to dance Bollywood style, get a henna tattoo, make a special Diwali craft to take home, and experience the joy of Diwali. A big thank you goes to our Berkeley Hall Indian community for hosting this fabulous event and giving this gift to our community.

Also at this event, we hope that all will embrace the message of Diwali, being the light, and shine outward by giving back via iSparkel Inc., an organization which helps children in the slums of India. Because it drops down to 40 degrees in winter in Delhi, the PRI and INT Student Councils would like to invite people to donate warm winter items to iSparkle. • This is OUR School!

As a member of the Leadership Team, I am proud to be a part of a community in which its members write sentiments like what you see below. It's a poem of sorts, which I received in an email and want to share with you, as it reflects what we all love about Berkeley Hall.

I was walking the track after school,
And there was a swim meet, and there was a football game,
And everywhere I walked, people called out and waved.
    Why am I saying this?
Because I would like to express that our school is like a really great neighborhood.
That everywhere you go, there are people glad to see you, wave at you, talk to you, share their lives with you.
We raise our children together, and share in their challenges and successes.
When I listened to the cheering, it was for every effort, and every child.
So, this is what we love about our school!
It’s a really big, really great neighborhood, where everyone has such a precious stake, and everyone cares about everyone.

  • LA Kitchen Presentation

President and Founder of L.A. Kitchen Robert Eggers gave a special presentation to our ECD students as part of our Difference Makers Series. He explained the food chain cycle from the dirt in which seeds start to grow, to the no-waste food preparation, all the way to the compost pile that ends up as dirt. Students were captivated when asked to pass around fresh fruits and vegetables to feel and smell, while learning that nothing needs to be wasted when it comes to food. It was an educational and entertaining presentation. Thank you, Mr. Robert!

  • Toothpaste Fun in Fourth

What smells minty fresh and teaches our students about the power of their words? Toothpaste, of course!

This annual favorite among fourth graders across BHS is a powerful tool that helps teach students about the power of their words in building a strong class community. Through a reading of Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson and a few tubes of toothpaste, fourth graders learned the value of thinking before speaking, and how to better support their peers around campus.

“We squeezed out the toothpaste, and it is just impossible to put back into the tube!” shouted Keanu to his partner Lola.

“It’s like our words!” added Jason. “Once your words are out, they’re out.”

Jason is right. Like toothpaste squeezed from a tube, once words are out, they cannot be put back in. Apologizing helps, but thinking first is better! On the rug after our minty experiment, many students were quick to find the connection between the activity and how this translates to making our class stronger and more supportive of one another. Everyone soon realized that choosing our words carefully is the best plan.

If you see fourth graders around campus, feel free to ask them about the toothpaste activity and what we’re up to in class. They’re off to a great start in Intermediate!

2016 Track Meets Bring Out the Best

It was the last event of the day - the high jump competition. Students and adults gathered around the pit to watch the last two jumpers battle it out for first place. Before each of them jumped, a hush fell over the crowd... waited... waited... silent... watched... and then erupted with enthusiastic cheers when the bar was cleared. This happened over and over, both jumpers from Berkeley Hall congratulating each other when they made it and encouraging each other when they didn't. Until finally, one of the students cleared the height and the other one didn't. But honestly, our memory isn't about who won the event that day, but about the atmosphere of support shown by all who witnessed this remarkable demonstration of camaraderie and sportsmanship and teamwork. There's something truly glorious about moments like that - they lift the human spirit - and make us all feel connected.

Berkeley Hall hosted many schools for two full-days of track and field competition. Junior High and Intermediate students each had a full day of doing their best after weeks of practice during PE. Many parents came out to cheer them on and witness the grit and grace exhibited by all.

Senior Send-Off for BHS Class of 2012

Our Berkeley Hall Alumni, Class of 2012, reunited at BHS on May 5th for their ‘Senior Send-Off.’ The students reminisced about their Berkeley Hall years with their former teachers, administrators, and staff, laughing at some memories, nostalgic about others, and happy to be back to their educational roots. A current student walking by was thrilled to recognize her buddy (BHS older classes pair up with younger classes for shared special activities) from four years ago. These bright, young alumni’s college plans include: Stanford University, University of Southern California, Evergreen State College in Washington, University of Delaware, University of Wisconsin, Belmont University, Mt. Saint Mary’s College, Gonzaga University, Santa Monica College, California Polytechnic State University at Pomona, University of Connecticut, and Carnegie Mellon University.

Berkeley Hall is so proud of these Alumni and warmly wish them a truly exciting new adventure as college students!

  • Depth of Study Being Noticed

As many of you know, one of the things that distinguishes Berkeley Hall is our commitment to ongoing teacher professional collaboration through our Depth of Study initiative. Our teachers and administrators have adopted the same growth mindset that we encourage in our students. They meet once (or more!) per week to study samples of our students’ work, plan and revise lessons, create consistent ways to assess student academic growth and address areas of relative strength and weakness within our program. We are on the move and we are constantly improving! While it may be hard to believe, this is not always the case at even the most prestigious schools, since too often the prevalent culture of teaching – “we’ve always done it this way” – can often keep real, data-based change from occurring. Too often, educators and schools are tempted to rest on their laurels or depend on their reputations rather than improving the educational process for all their students.

I was reminded of how important our Depth of Study work is when Ms. Colmaire and I visited a wonderful Westside preschool this week. The director of that preschool had come to visit us for an Admission tour this past winter and had spoken with me afterward about how impressed she was by our school’s ongoing process to improve teaching and learning. As a result, she felt as though our elementary school and junior high environment was a good future fit for many of the children at her preschool. It is always heartening to hear that the professional cutting-edge work we do at Berkeley Hall is noticed and appreciated by other educators.

    "Grease" Receives Standing Ovation

"I'm so proud of them!" said Director Sanjay Chandani of the Junior High Elective Class members in their production of Grease. It was a huge success. The actors did two performances one in the afternoon for the school and a night performance for the parents and guests. The evening performance had a great turnout and received a standing ovation. Born to Hand Jive, Grease Lightning, We Go Together and Summer Nights brought the house down!

After performing for the student body, actors were available on stage for a Q&A. Students asked the actors about the choreography, how they stayed in character for such a long time, and did she really kiss Danny Zuko on the cheek among many others. Choreographer Cindy Hygate was delighted with the actors' growth in picking up complex choreography between the first rehearsals and the final performances. Musical Director Geoffrey Fontaine said, "The commitment to additional after-school rehearsals and as well as going over the songs during muncho and lunch really paid off." Director Sanjay Chandani was thrilled; "This was a prop-and-costume-heavy show and the actors had to crew their own show, wear head-set mics for the first time, and stay in character for an hour and 45 minutes. I am truly proud of the hard work they put in and the success the actors reaped."

    Dr. Staley Speaks at CAIS

I’ve been thinking recently about how much I appreciate our parents’ support of our Depth of Study work. We feel as though this work is starting to yield great academic results for our students and we cherish the time we have to professionally collaborate on Wednesday mornings (and often at other times during the week). The professional work we’re doing here at Berkeley Hall caught the attention of the California Association of Independent Schools (the organization of which we and other independent schools are members and which is responsible for reviewing and accrediting our school).

Jim McManus, CAIS’ Executive Director, asked that I present our Depth of Study work to the CAIS statewide Assessment Task Force last Friday. I was much encouraged by feedback from Jim and the task force members. They asked many questions about how our school has been able to develop a system-wide professional development system that leads to clearer standards for students and teachers alike and they characterized Berkeley Hall’s approach as “brave” and educationally “cutting edge.” I deeply appreciate our BHS teachers for their willingness to work both inside and outside their classrooms to continually improve our students’ learning.
